Antique divided-back color printed postcard of the Shell Chapel at St. Mary's of the Woods, Terre Haute, Indiana, published by A. Herz of Terre Haute. Front shows the small square stone chapel with hipped roof, arched doorway and front steps among trees. Standard 3.5 x 5.5 in, posted from Terre Haute in June 1909 with a one-cent green Franklin stamp. Good antique condition with light corner and edge wear, some toning on the back, and the period handwritten message.
Front caption: "Shell Chapel at St. Mary's of the Woods, Terre Haute, Ind." Back is printed "Post Card" with "Published by A. Herz, Terre Haute, Ind." along the left edge. Machine cancel reads Terre Haute, Ind., Jun 14, 1909, 10:30 AM.
Message in pencil-style script: "This building is made of shells and I am going to visit it while I am here." Signed Gretchen, addressed to Miss Marie Wallin, Normal, Illinois. A nice early local-publisher view with a message that describes the chapel itself.
