About this piece
Early divided back color postcard of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Parochial Home in Warren, Ohio, printed in Germany. Vertical view of the red brick and stone church with its tall cross-topped bell tower, arched stained glass windows and side turret, with young trees along the street. Standard 3.5 x 5.5 in, unposted but with a handwritten message on the back. Good vintage condition with light corner wear, toning and a few small spots.
Front caption: "St. Mary's Catholic Church and Parochial Home, Warren, Ohio." Back: red "Post Card" heading, "Place Stamp Here / Domestic One Cent / Foreign Two Cents" box, "Made in Germany" and number 252-1626 (first digits slightly faint).
The ink message is a memorable one, written across the back: "This is our new Catholic Church on High St. The Priest got scalded. Fell into a bathtub while drunk." No stamp, postmark, names or address.
A pre-World War I German-printed Warren view with an unusually candid local-gossip message, a fun piece for Ohio, Trumbull County and Catholic church collectors.
