About this piece

Linen postcard of the Catholic Cathedral in St. Louis, Missouri, published by the Paul Monroe Company, card number 47852. Front shows the domed cathedral with twin green-roofed towers and rose window under a sunset sky, with a red building at right. Standard 3.5 x 5.5 in, posted from St. Louis in August 1942 with a 1 cent Statue of Liberty "For Defense" stamp. Good vintage condition with light corner and edge wear and a small crease near the right edge of the back.

Front caption: "12:-Catholic Cathedral, St. Louis, Mo." Back caption: "This is indeed one of the most magnificent of modern American cathedrals. It is of greater magnitude than the famous Westminster Abbey in London, seating over 4,000 people. The murals and mosaics from the hands of masters, make this edifice a religious art palace." Marked "Made in U.S.A." with a round Metropolitan logo at the bottom.

Handwritten message to Hazel and Norma Pope of Pana, Illinois: "Dear Kids: Just thot I'd drop you a card. I'm visiting my cousins down here again. I came down Tues. I am going to come back Sun. so will see you soon. Tell Mom, Pop, Jackie and Speed I said hello." A nice WWII-era linen with family names for St. Louis and Pana collectors.
