London Stereoscopic Company Stereoview Byzantine Court Crystal Palace No. 1 — photo 1 of 2

About this piece

Antique stereoview by The London Stereoscopic Company, No. 1 "The Byzantine Court" (continued in Nos. 21, 22, 39), showing the arched and mosaic-patterned court of the Crystal Palace with a black marble fountain and recumbent royal effigies in the foreground. Arched albumen views on a mauve flat mount, about 7 x 3.4 inches. Used condition with a brown stain at the upper left of the back and light general wear.

The company name is blind-embossed on the front left and on the back edge. The back carries a printed description of the Byzantine Court, naming the Crystal Palace, a fountain copied from one at Heisterbach on the Rhine, and the effigies from Fontevrault Abbey of Henry II, his queen Eleanor (printed "Eleonora") and Isabella, wife of King John. A pencil number is written at the upper left.

The Crystal Palace was rebuilt at Sydenham after the 1851 Great Exhibition, and its Fine Arts Courts were a favorite early stereo subject. A good card for collectors of Victorian London, the Crystal Palace, medieval art and early British stereoviews.
