About this piece

Lot of three antique stereoview cards of British abbeys and an old Scottish house, each about 7 x 3.5 inches. Two are from M'Glashon's Scottish Stereographs, "Realities of the Waverley Novels, Burns' Poems, Scottish Songs, &c.": No. 10 Melrose Abbey and No. 3 Hawthornden, each with its pink printed descriptive label on the back. The third is a hand-tinted view captioned "21 Furness Abbey — north end of Transept from the nave," with a small green Franklin, Optician, 112 S. Fourth St., Philadelphia retailer label on the back. All three show age: toning, foxing spots, corner wear and old pencil numbers on the backs.

• Melrose Abbey (M'Glashon No. 10) — the ruined east end and churchyard; the label recounts the abbey's founding by David I and its ties to Scott's Lay of the Last Minstrel, The Abbot and The Monastery.
• Hawthornden (M'Glashon No. 3) — the turreted house above the river, described on the label as the residence of the poet Drummond, with its rock-cut caverns.
• Furness Abbey (No. 21) — hand-colored arched-top view through the great pointed arches, a small figure in red standing in the ruins.

A nice small group for collectors of early stereo photography, Scottish and Walter Scott-related views, or Gothic ruins. Please see all photos for condition.
