About this piece
Original 1930 graduation portrait of a young woman, in its silver-embossed Hartsook studio folder, marked "Hartsook / California" below the image. Pencil on the back identifies her as "Bessie La Verne Carter / Graduating June 6, '30." The folder measures about 5.4 x 8.1 inches. Condition: very good, with one tiny mark on the folder face.
The sepia head-and-shoulders portrait shows her with a finger-waved bob, a smile and a strand of pearls, framed by an embossed silver floral border. The folder has a textured gray face with a deckle edge and an envelope-style flap on the back, with an embossed device on the reverse.
Hartsook was a well-known California portrait studio chain of the early 20th century.
A named and dated graduation portrait, good for family history, California, or 1920s-30s fashion collectors. From the same family collection; other photos from this family are listed separately.
