About this piece
Lewis' Official Pittsburgh Guide, 21st Edition, published by Lewis Publishing Co. (New York, Pittsburgh, Chicago), 75-cent cover price. Pocket-size softcover with an indexed street guide to 5,472 streets, avenues and ways "listing all newly annexed districts," a directory of public buildings, depots, hotels, office buildings, theatres, libraries, amusement resorts, parks and hospitals, and a folding route map attached inside the back cover. Used, fair condition: the stapled text block has come loose from the orange cover, the covers are worn and scuffed with edge chipping, and the pages are toned.
The back cover is a full-page Gulf Products advertisement listing some three dozen Pittsburgh Gulf station locations by intersection and neighborhood (Bloomfield, Carrick, Mt. Oliver, North Side, West End, Dormont), with 24-hour stations starred. The inside front cover advertises "More Than a Million Lewis Maps Sold in Pittsburgh," naming Pittsburgh Railways Company, Gulf Oil, West Penn Traction and the Harmony and New Castle routes as buyers. The map side carries a charter-coach ad for picnics, clubs and lodges.
A great piece for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County history, streetcar and transit collectors, Gulf Oil and petroliana collectors, and genealogists tracing old street names.
