About this piece
Antique hand-tinted stereoview, c. 1858-1865, showing two young women in full crinoline gowns in a richly furnished parlor: one seated reading a small book, the other leaning on an ornate writing table beside her, with a statuette, heavy green curtains, a fire screen and a cushion on the patterned carpet. Arched-top albumen images on a buff flat mount, about 6.9 x 3.4 in. The mount is soiled and toned with corner wear, and there is foxing on the back.
There is no printed title or publisher on the card. The back carries a small green retailer's label reading M. I. Franklin, Optician, 112 S. Fourth St, Philad'a, showing where the view was sold, along with an old pencil number 104.
The careful hand coloring in green, rose and blue is typical of the staged Victorian genre and tableau views of the period. A nice example for collectors of early stereoviews, fashion and costume history, and hand-colored photography.
