About this piece

Estate group tied to the family of Pvt. Willie Elbert Durham (1918-1944) of Humphreys County, Tennessee, 184th Infantry, 7th Infantry Division, killed on Leyte, Philippines, 8 December 1944. Found together in an Oxford, Alabama estate. The Purple Heart medal itself is NOT included. Condition: case shows age wear, scuffs and spotting, with a reddish stain along one edge; snapshots have edge wear and some creasing.

Included:
- WWII-era Purple Heart presentation case, black with gilt wavy border and gilt "PURPLE HEART" lid, satin lining with lapel-button slot. Unengraved. Empty of medal.
- 3 lapel buttons in the case: 1 Purple Heart lapel button and 2 Army Good Conduct Medal lapel buttons.
- 7 original black and white snapshots of his military funeral and burial at home, likely after his remains were returned from the Pacific (late 1940s). They show the flag-draped casket carried by uniformed pallbearers, the graveside service, a large crowd, and rows of 1940s cars. One is captioned in ink "Funeral for Elbert Durham." Another shows the family headstone of his sister Mary Jewell Durham (1916-1934), captioned "Aunt Jewel." Backs are blank except a printed lab number.

His Find a Grave memorial (No. 100173280) carries a copy of one of these funeral photos. The case is not engraved and no papers came with it; it is offered as found with these photos in the same family estate.
